Mike Summers - October 2012:
Louisville is a minimum one-night or two-night visit. You can use the bus system (exact change) to get to/from the airport to downtown. You'll take the Route 2 - Second Street Northbound Bus to get to downtown (Websites:
http://www.flylouisville.com/Ground-Transportation/
and
http://www.ridetarc.org/maps-schedule/view-route/185/route-2-second-street
). You can also rent a car at the airport. Our flights arrive at 4:00 PM and leave Louisville to Denver at 4:30 PM. Here's a website for tourist attractions in Louisville:
http://www.gotolouisville.com/index.aspx
. Of course, the home of the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs, is in Louisville (Website:
http://www.churchilldowns.com/
). There is racing at different times of the year. A second sport location in Louisville is the Muhammad Ali Center (Websites:
http://www.alicenter.org/
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali_Center
) where you can see a short film about his life and look at memorabilia. It's located along Louisville's museum row. A third sporting location is the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory (Websites:
http://sluggermuseum.com/
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisville_Slugger_Museum_%26_Factory
) where you can see bats being made, visit a museum of famous bats, and learn about the development of bats through the years. Kentucky Bourbon is a favorite adult beverage of mine. 1/3 of the world's bourbon is made in Louisville. Bourbon is to Kentucky what wine is to Napa Valley. Here's a link for various bourbon tours (Website:
http://www.gotolouisville.com/play/louisville-originals/kentucky-bourbon/index.aspx
). My four favorite Bourbon bars are: Haymarket Whiskey Bar (Website:
http://haymarketwhiskeybar.com/
) where there is live music four days a week, Makers Mark Bourbon House (Website:
http://www.makerslounge.com/
) where they offer 'flights' or bourbons and a nice outdoor patio, the Brown Hotel Bar (Website:
http://www.bourbonblog.com/bars/2010/03/16/the-brown-hotel-bar-louisville-kentucky/
) where you must try the Bourbon Ball, and the Bourbons Bistro (website:
http://www.bourbonsbistro.com/Bourbons/home.html
), which offers 130 bourbons from $5 to $75. All of these places also have excellent menus for great food. I like to run. There is an excellent trail that follows the riverfront from downtown (website:
http://www.traillink.com/trail/louisville-riverwalk.aspx
) to the west along the river. Some nice views of the river and boats passing by on the Ohio. I couldn't find any place that rents bicycles, but the run was all I needed. For some night life, I enjoyed going to Howl At The Moon Piano Bar (Website:
http://www.howlatthemoon.com/locations/location-louisville
) and also to the Comedy Caravan for some humor (Website:
http://comedycaravan.com/index.cfm
). If you rented a car, you can visit areas outside of Louisville such as distilleries and Lincoln's birthplace (Websites:
http://www.kentuckytourism.com/explore/regions/kentuckys_derby_region.aspx
and
http://www.kentuckytourism.com/things_to_do/bourbon/distilleries_attractions.aspx
and
http://www.nps.gov/abli/index.htm
). Louisville is a nice place to visit!
Enjoy!
